Relaxing COVID-19 related policies, online booking, and hiring therapists.

Beginning Tuesday, June 1, we will be changing several procedures that have been in place for the last 14 months. Some of these changes include the beginning of relaxed COVID- 19 related policies and procedures.

Masks will still be worn by all of our employees. While we strongly encourage their use by clients, those who have been vaccinated may now choose whether they wish to wear a mask.

Clients will no longer need to call the front desk and wait in their cars prior to their sessions. We will be opening our waiting area subject to a limited capacity of three (3) clients at any given time. You may still be asked to wait if this capacity has been reached.

Due to concerns about the online appointment request system we have been using, we will be temporarily discontinuing this service while we search for an acceptable alternative. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our clients who request appointments online.

We also want to address concerns about our limited appointment availability. We know that it has been difficult to schedule appointments for anything but several weeks out. We continue to seek out appropriately skilled therapists despite current difficulties. We want to be able to help you as much as you want that help.

Should I get a massage during the COVID-19 pandemic?

As of January 15, 2021, payment will be taken after your service at the front desk. We are allowing only one person at a time at the desk.

All of us at Advanced Therapeutic Massage wish to provide therapeutic massage services to our clients in a safe environment during COVID-19. Before deciding to make an appointment, each client should self-screen for symptoms and evaluate his/her individual circumstances to decide whether massage at this time is appropriate. If you’re still uncertain whether massage at this time is right for you, we hope that the following list outlining some of our safety and sanitation procedures will help you make that choice.

          • Before being allowed to work for the day all employees are required to self-screen for known symptoms. Once arriving at work each employee must pass a temperature check.
          • All employees and clients are required to properly wear a mask while in the building.
          • Except for your therapist, we ensure that proper social distancing is maintained between you and others. When you come into our office, there will be no other guests in our waiting room or the hallways you pass through. Remain in your vehicle after calling to let us know you’ve arrived. Once we have properly sanitized and make sure all other guests are either in the room for their session or have left the building, your therapist will come outside to personally welcome you in.
          • When your therapist escorts you into the building, your temperature will be taken with a contactless thermometer.
          • Your therapist takes you directly to the therapy room. No immediate interaction with anyone but your therapist is required. Everything from paperwork to payment is completed without leaving the therapy room.
          • Before and after each session the therapy room and any surface you or your therapist has come in contact with is sanitized using only cleaning products approved by CDC guidelines.
          • The remainder of the building is cleaned, vacuumed, and mopped with CDC-approved cleaning products at the end of each day.

1. Helps to improve lubrication of the joints within the body. Synovial fluid, the joint lubricant, is moved through the joint space and nourishes the cartilage that protects the bones.

2. Improves posture. Tight muscles that cause poor posture are relaxed bringing bones and joints into proper alignment. This will decrease pain and increase better movement.

3. Specific massage strokes applied to soft tissue will help decrease scar tissue, reduce knots in muscles, and realign muscle fibers.

5. Corrects compensation patterns throughout the body. When there is a specific injury that decreases function, the body will activate other muscles to create the necessary movement and protect the injured muscle. This will lead to inefficient movement patterns and pain. Massage can help treat overused muscles that are compensating for the injured muscle.

6. Relaxation. A relaxed body heals faster, has a stronger immune system, sleeps better, and experiences less pain.

Advanced Therapeutic Massage is a gifted team of therapists who are well versed in varied techniques designed to bring balance back to the body, reduce pain and increase feelings of well-being. Our therapists are licensed by the state of Texas and have extensive amounts of experience and continuing education. Our knowledge, our belief in individualized care and our teamwork approach to body work allows us to be highly effective with a broad range of clients.

Because of the challenges of many of our cases, our therapists meet regularly to discuss client care. These meetings allow our team to draw on more than 50 years of collective experience in an effort to apply the best that massage training can offer. What Causes Leg Cramps?

ATM bananas - blog postRecently, one of our clients asked the question “What causes my leg cramps at night?”

There are several possibilities; the most likely cause is dehydration (especially in hot weather), followed by potassium deficiency, and finally, prescription drugs.

So, what can you do?

To eliminate the cramping at the time of occurrence, massage your calves, and then stretch them by lifting your toes (avoid pointing them) while in a standing position. Lean forward over your toes, and then walk around until the cramps subside.

Monitor your water intake and drink at least half your body weight in ounces. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, drink 100 ounces of water per day.

Add at least two or more healthy servings of potassium-rich foods per day. Ideally, choosing one protein source and two or more servings of fruits and vegetables everyday should successfully reduce leg cramps.

If drinking more water and increasing your potassium doesn’t eliminate your leg cramps, review any medications you are taking. Be sure to read the side effects of all prescription drugs; there are some that have been known to cause nocturnal leg cramping.

Following is a list of potassium-rich foods:

Fruits: bananas, grapefruit, oranges, nectarines, apricots, tomatoes, dates, grapes, raisins, and their juices

Vegetables: broccoli, cabbage, beans, potatoes, and corn

Proteins: saltwater fish, pork and lamb

Therapeutic massage in combination with the above regimen is also likely to enhance the elimination of nocturnal cramps. Additionally, stretching your calves along with daily exercise can rid the body of excess lactic acid produced by cramping of the muscle tissue.

Pain Management: Heat or Ice?

hot vs cold bonesBoth ice and heat are common treatments used to reduce pain due to injuries and soreness in the body. The decision to treat with heat or ice is generally based on two factors: 1) the length of time since injury or onset of pain and 2) the type of pain you’re experiencing.

Ice reduces swelling and spasm in muscle tissue–moderating the influx of blood to the affected area. Therefore, ice therapy is appropriate if:
-an injury is recent (from 0-72 hours)
-swelling and redness is present

Heat increases circulation. The application of heat, whether by a hot shower, a heat pack or a hot tub, has the ability to increase blood flow to the area experiencing pain. As a result, heat therapy is appropriate if:
-stiffness and loss of motion are present

In some cases, a combination of ice and heat therapies may be appropriate. For instance, if:
-an injury or onset of pain has been present longer than 72 hours
-the injury or pain is chronic and/or resistant to healing

If you are unsure of which therapy to use or have a combination of symptoms, ice is the safest choice.

Please note: heat is NOT used on an acute injury. While heat increases blood (circulation) to the area, it can also cause inflammation, potentially increasing pain. If the use of heat increases pain, stop using heat and begin using ice.

Since muscle tension causes misalignment of the physical structure, addressing muscular imbalance should often be our first line of defense.Still, many people believe that the common headache is a result of something other than muscle tension. Medication for a headache may be helpful and/or needed as a temporary measure; however, true pain relief is often achieved only with manual therapy.

In some cases, other forms of manual therapy may also be helpful; chiropractic care, physical therapy and acupuncture are highly complementary to massage work. Combining these modalities has been known to be highly beneficial.

Studies also show significant benefits of healing through touch, ranging from treating chronic illness or injury-related pain to reducing stress from day-to-day living. The Importance of Water

Water Being Poured Into GlassThe importance of water consumption is a hot topic in health-oriented environments. Next to air, it is the MOST important element we consume. Why then, is it so hard for us to get enough water?My theory is twofold: First, we are distracted by “waterlike” products designed to cover up the taste of water. Second, other beverages containing caffeine, sugar, and/or sugar substitute tend to become habit (coffee and sodas are extremely habit-forming).Two-thirds of our body weight is water. As a result, consuming enough water for our bodies to operate efficiently is crucial! It is commonly recommended to drink a minimum of half of your body weight in ounces per day. Fuel your body with pure water! I raise my glass of water and cheer “To Our Health!”

What is Fascia?

ATM Slider - Body Charts 5 - cropThe American Heritage Medical Dictionary defines fascia as a sheet or band of fibrous connective tissue enveloping, separating, or binding together muscles, organs, and other soft structures of the body. Fascial restriction (sometimes referred to as Myofascial Pain Syndrome) is as COMMON in those who are active as it is in those who are sedentary. Pain that is difficult to pinpoint typically has a muscle as well as a fascial component. In treating this syndrome, we use a technique called myofascial release to reduce pain and inflammation in the body. Those who have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Polymyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Chronic Pain Syndrome often find this treatment extremely beneficial.
